Favorite Corners - Split

Sitting on the edge of the Adriatic Sea, Split is the second largest city in Croatia, but still manages to feel like a cozy coastal town. Brimming with history, that overflows into nearby towns, sites, and islands, Split is a great home base to branch out and explore.

Split’s waterfront promenade, called the Riva, is home to shops, restaurants, and tour boats. When ferries arrive from other places in Croatia, this is the first thing they see.

One of the things we loved about Split was its abundance of great day or half-day trips. Trogir is a small seaside town near the airport and an hour bus ride away.

The Museum of Archeology in Split is a small outdoor museum housing very well preserved items from the city of Salona. The unusual thing here is that none of these treasures are behind ropes and glass, so you can get a pretty close look at all of the friezes, tombstones, and column pieces.

Okay, so buses here need to be waved down, and when venturing outside of the city, the bus stops can range from a simple rectangle marked off by paint along the side of the road to something like this. Here we are halfway down a mountain, waiting for a bus back to Split. Sometimes it’s the weirdest things than make the best memories.

While we really enjoyed exploring inside the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, there are many really unique architectural gems outside the walls as well.

Pomegranates ripening over a fence. The ease and accessibility of growing things like oranges and olives so close to one’s home never ceases to amaze me here.

Uvala Jezinac was the beach we chose to spend our last day in Split. It is a small pebble beach with calm waters…

… great sea walk, and cats too.
