Food Fridays - Split

We continue on our exploration of food along the Croatian coast. Seafood was a must again, obviously, but we also discovered that lamb was no slouch either. Overall, we found food prices in Split more affordable than Dubrovnik, but no less tasty.

Our first meal in Split was a recommended restaurant specializing in fried seafood. Calamari is served!

Pistachio ice cream and a chocolate covered cookie for dessert!

Grilled white fish fillet over polenta with traditional sauce. We were warned that the sauce was a bit sour, but we thought it paired very well with everything.

Lamb marinated in rosemary and garlic sauce with homemade French fries. So yeah, this when we discovered that we needed to try more lamb.

Green tagliatelle with salmon, prawns, and shrimp. It was at this point I had to look up the differences between prawns and shrimp.

Homemade ravioli with prawns, prosciutto, and tomato sauce. What the menu neglected to mention were the three cheeses. As in each one of these giant raviolis was stuffed with a different kind of cheese. Absolutely amazing.

In my quest to drink anything but bottled water because it’s so expensive, and tap water is drinkable here but not all places will serve it, I discovered Cedevita which is a local vitamin powder that is, by no means, a substitute for actual fruits and veggies, but comes served with a glass of…you guessed it, tap water.

Clear broth fish soup. Simple and comforting.

A new find for us on this trip was white coffee. It still looks like the same color as regular coffee, but the beans are less roasted which makes for a less bitter acidic aftertaste.

The softest pillowiest gnocchi ever in a creamy mushroom and streaky bacon sauce.

A classic carbonara eaten alfresco. It was a good day.

Time for another gelato break. While on the hunt for different flavors, we found a small shop that sold one I hadn’t seen yet. Lavender!

A quick and cheap on the go food, we fell in love with cevapi which is grilled meat shaped into tubes. You can order sandwiches with 3 to 10 cevapi in them. And if they ask what toppings and sauce you want, go with the traditional route and get everything on it.

Not quite in Split, but somewhere on the side of the road between the three hour journey between Split and Plitvice lakes, there was this little restaurant which served a delicious lamb shank off the spit and falling off the bone.

A sea plate for two? Don’t mind if we do! Octopus salad, salted anchovies, marinated anchovies, smoked tuna, fish pate and a light sprinkling of small green things.

The winner for best gelato flavor discovered on this trip? Blood orange!
