Favorite Corners - Munich

We encountered a few mild "shocks" while in Munich.  1. Cold shock - we got our first taste of snow in months.  2. Sticker shock - food in Asia was so cheap; food in Europe is less so.  3. Culture shock - we had to relearn that some things are actually closed on Sundays.

Wandering the charming Munich streets.

Viscardigasse is a small pedestrian alley that holds a subtle golden monument to those who took this route to bypass the required Hitler salute to the nearby Nazi memorial and its guards.

Sendlinger Tor.  One of three remaining city gates.  And lots of snow!

Spot the monks.  Monks are an important part of Munich history (they were the original beer brewers and part of how Munich got its name ).

The Hofbrauhaus.  The royal beer hall, and still popular as ever. 

The Munich Residenz.  A maze of over 190 rooms filled with tapestries, antique furniture and other things befitting a royal household.  I was putting together a post for this but found that the photos just didn't do it justice.  This was the only pic that came close. 

Asamkirche.  What happens when two brothers get together and build their own private church? A stunning baroque masterpiece.

Neuschwanstein Castle.  Built by a reclusive king for his own escape from reality, the interior of this castle is an amazing blend of Byzantine architecture, religion, and the musical works of Wagner.

How much do the people of Munich love their meat?  There's a whole magazine dedicated to the carving, seasoning, and eating of beef.
