Food Fridays - Hong Kong
With over 12,000 restaurants in Hong Kong, this bustling city can make tourists want to reach for the food rather than the stars. But even then, the stars are still within reach. From Michelin star restaurants to cheap street eats, there’s something for everyone in Hong Kong.
Let’s start out with the most important meal of the day. Breakfast! A set meal that includes a pineapple bun accompanies a hearty bowl of beef satay and instant ramen. With Hong Kong style milk tea, of course.
A cheery neon sign welcomes you to Sabah, a Michelin Star restaurant in 2023 and 2024. Atmosphere is unpretentious, and prices are reasonable. Starting out with Malaysian Satay skewers!
Seafood pandan rice with coconut milk. How much does this dish cost in a Michelin star restaurant you might ask (okay, even if you didn’t, I did) - $16!!
A delicious strawberry waffle big enough to share! New restaurants are popping up all the time in this city. The recently built (2023) shopping complex, Airside, holds numerous trendy, modern places and is pet-friendly too!
Feel like grabbing a snack or eating in? Wander around Graham Street Market (one of the few remaining outdoor markets) to see what types of fruits and vegetables are local and in season. There might also be a kitty or two minding the stall!
A more modern take on sweet and sour pork with pineapple…serve it on top of ice (yes, the meat was still hot) along with a side of tender abalone, and a melon and seafood soup.
One thing I like about the Asian diet is the abundance of fresh vegetable options. This is fresh water spinach (tong choi) stir-fried with garlic, ginger, and chilis. Delicious!
A yummy shrimp Pad-Thai garnished with freshly chopped peanuts, a wedge of lime, and a stalk of fresh lemongrass for decoration.
And since we haven’t had a huge-plate-of-meat post since we were in South Korea, here’s some deep fried pork knuckle.
