Food Fridays - Busan
There was a lot of food we wanted to try in beautiful Busan. So much so, in fact, that we kept getting distracted by other food options and completely missed the seafood! Not quite sure how that happened since Busan is renowned for having some of the freshest seafood, but before we knew it, it was time to move on. Oh well. I guess this just means we will have to go back!
Let’s start with a little appetizer, shall we? Well, “little” might not be the best word to describe these King dumplings stuffed with pork and vegetables. What made them king? They were almost the size of my fist!
We did have some rain for our first day of Busan, so we searched for something warm and comforting and close to home. We climbed some stairs and found a cozy restaurant overlooking the beach and tried this delicious curry with double eggs.
Spicy beef bone soup that came still bubbling and boiling in its bowl. Lots of veggies and shredded beef and probably the spiciest dish we had on the trip.
Spicy ramen, because, well, one of us is a big ramen fan, so we had to try it at least once while we were here.
Not a big fan of spicy? Never fear! We found quite a few non-spicy food options to enjoy while we were here. For example, a peach layer cake with a matching peach smoothie. There are a ton of restaurants and cafes lined up along the boardwalk in Gwangalli beach. Many have second floor (or higher) seating to take advantages of the view of the water and the bridge at night.
Time for a tea ceremony! Properly whisked matcha tea and a set of little traditional Korean desserts including little candied oranges from Jeju.
Ox bone soup or seolleongtang. Oh, I loved this soup. A rich bone broth, slices of brisket and beef flank, and noodles. There is a little jar of salt and pepper on the side to season to taste.
Korean bbq! We ordered a set meat menu from the ordering screen built into our table and before we knew it, our table was garnished little bowls of powdered seasoning to dip our pork in and tasty side-dishes. We then we added a pot of steamed egg and a mini bibimbap.
A nourishing breakfast of pork rice soup. Warm and nourishing. A great way to start the day. The rice is in the silver container on the side and if you let it sit there, it develops a delicious char to add to the flavor.
Jeju hallabong cake with a night view of the rainbow bridge. A hallabong is a type of orange grown specifically in Jeju. Oh, and a chocolate latte, which is a fancy way of saying a very nice hot chocolate.
A huge plate of Korean fried chicken with two dipping options on the side ( a special salt and a sweet and spicy sauce). So. Much. Chicken.
We found a little European style cafe that served a delicious French toast with maple syrup, coconut flakes, ice cream, and fresh fruit. A little taste of home. Only better.
Last but not least, gimbap. I’ve discovered that gimbap is one on my favorite quick meals here and became my go-to breakfast option. At the Busan train station, we got all of this and sides for $4!!
