Air Plants

A behind the scenes photo of the air plants and the glass jars, ready for their debut.

Well, another short film is here. Sometimes when I write, certain pieces begin as a montage of images in my head. This film began in another writing workshop. A photo of two plants in glass beakers was shown to the class as a prompt. I began to imagine a pair of lonely plants staring at each other through the glass, but never able to touch. When I wrote the piece, it felt a little flat, or incomplete. I kept seeing these two plants in my head. So, I turned it into a film.

There are three air plants in this film. Originally, I choose three for visual balance, but then they began to develop their own little backstories in my head as I worked through the storyboard. Two of the air plants kept the imagery from the workshop of wanting to be together, so in the film, they are always hanging around each other. The third air plant seeks the freedom to explore the world. Although it’s hard to see the visual differences between the air plants, if you look closely, perhaps you can identify them by their behavior.

Air Plants - A short poetry film by Jenny Wong. Runtime: 2:38 minutes.

For most of my films, I attempt to create background music for them in Garage Band. Here is the soundtrack to Air Plants (music only).
